When My Time Has Come: I Am

By September 5, 2024Writing

When my time has come

And my body should die

And pass from this world to the great beyond

To join the great guitar solo in the sky

There is only one thing

Of the treasures I find

That I want to pass on

To those left behind

The answer to the questions

People asked me over again

That I struggled to answer

Since my journey began

Where did you come from?

Where will you go?

What really matters?

Are you living ‘just so’?

Are you doing the things

Every morning and night

That make you a good person?

So you don’t lose “the fight”?

Are you on the right side?

Do you think the right way?

Do you follow without question

What other people say?

Are you earning your worth?

Did you pay the right price?

Did you deny your human nature?

Did you make a sufficient sacrifice?

What is the answer

I struggled to give?

Over sleepless nights and wet pillows

What was my reason to live?

It took a long time

Hard talks and worse days

To find the answer I needed

To light up my ways

A moment of darkness

Gave way to awareness

Of my true Self and destiny

The nature of Oneness

I AM

Is what I found

Or, rather, myself

That I am one with all that surrounds

What is my purpose?

I AM

Why do I live?

I AM

Where did I come from?

The one I call I AM

To experience life

The greatest of jams

Where am I going?

Back to the embrace of the One

That is known by a thousand names

To rest from my journey when I am done

When the cycle repeats

And my soul is born anew

To dance once again

I’ll still be One with you

I AM is us, you, them, and me

We knew us before

For there are no barriers in I AM

And I will know you once more

When this world fades away

And we bid the universe adieu

I AM is what remains

Just me and you

I AM is within and without

I AM always was and is to be

I AM is the dark and I AM is the light

I AM is you, I AM is me

I AM is the bad days

And I AM is endless peace

Perfect in imperfection

And joy that will never cease

I AM is the answer

For every tear

My path and my guide

That leaves no place for fear

A great circle of creation

An unending dance

Of I AM, around and around

Through the infinite expanse

This one gift to my children

The knowledge of one

Of self-love and joy

Is what I’ll leave when I’m done

They won’t need greed

Because they already have it all

All that is, was, and will be

The great and the small

They won’t feel the rush

They won’t run the rat race

Because the flow of I AM

Will help them find their pace

They won’t feel loneliness

Through heartache and fun

They will see themselves in others

Beautiful aspects of the unnameable One

They won’t wander for happiness

Because their joy comes from within

Not money or titles

Or being pretty or thin

They won’t judge each other

Because life is a dance

We learn and we love

We get more than one chance

I AM

This is all I know

I AM

Where I’m from and where I’ll go

I AM

There is nothing more

I AM

This is what I’m here for

I AM

I want to give my girls

I AM

My treasures of a thousand worlds

I wrote this poem while sitting at my daughters’ gymnastics session. There isn’t much else for me to do besides sit and think since I am trying to reduce the amount of time I spend staring at my phone. I started thinking about the kinds of things I would want to give them to help them be successful, or have happy lives. And this is what came to me.
